What are Layers?

Layers are a way of associating related entities. CC3 has many pre-defined mapping layers including STRUCTURES and VEGETATION. CC3 pre-defines two other layers: Merge and Standard which can renamed, but not removed from a drawing. Each drawing has its own set of layers, each with its own layer status.

To set the current mapping layer it is worth using the layer buttons.

Multiple layers simplify editing of complex drawings. Use the Select Layer dialog box to select a layer to draw on. Only the current layer accepts new entities. To select, or exclude, or change entities on a particualar layer, select the editing command, right click then select the "Layer" option.

Hide individual layers so they don't show on screen or when you plot your drawing. You can use this feature to make custom GM-only maps.

Freeze individual layers to write-protect them. You can see and refer to entities on a frozen layer, but you can't erase them or modify them.

Move entities from one layer to another, using the CHANGE-LAYER command (Edit > Change > Layer).

Copy entities from one layer to another, using the COPY TO LAYER command (Copy > Copy to Layer).

image\tip.gif Layer tips

· The MAP BORDER and HEX/SQUARE GRID layers should be kept frozen and visible.

· If you hide the SYMBOL DEFINITION layer, all symbols will be hidden.

· When complete, the RELIEF/CONTOURS layer should be kept frozen.

· Layers (such as VEGETATION).that contain a lot of information can be hidden if things slow down.

· Modifiers will lock to frozen entities, so hide layers (such as HEX/SQUARE GRID) if they get in the way.
