How CC3 Display images
CC3 is very fast at displaying images – faster than anything else we've heard of. It is also capable of keeping the quality very high. This is how display of raster images works, including those in the new symbols and all bitmap fill styles. The combination of memory caching and multiple files means that even files with multiple very large images will still display very quickly, and allows you to create very large maps.
Memory caching
Images can be stored in memory. This makes redisplay massively quicker after the first time CC3 renders the drawing. When you have scrolled all the way down a symbol catalog, you'll find it works very fast the next time. CC3 will use as much memory as you let it have and won't let go unless you force it, so be careful when working with multiple applications. If you fill up the cache, it will remove the least recently used image when adding the lastest one.
You can control the size of the the memory cache and clear it from Display Speed Settings.
Multiple Files
Each image has four files, each of a different resolution. These are:
Name |
Size |
File Name Example |
Very High |
100% |
Castle_vh.png, desert_vh.bmp |
High |
40% |
Castle_hi.png, desert_hi.bmp |
Low |
10% |
Castle_lo.png, desert_lo.bmp |
Very Low |
2% |
Castle_lo.png, desert_lo.bmp |
Having multiple files is optional – if they aren't present CC3 will just display the single image. As you zoom in and out, CC3 will swap between resolutions. By default, you'll never see any loss in quality – CC3 will use the lowest resolution image which will still be full quality at the current zoom level. This means that when you zoom in, CC3 will display an extremely high resolution image, but still be fast.
File Reference
Images are not stored in directly in the drawing. Instead, CC3 stores a file location where the files reside. This means an file including many megabytes of images can still be very small. It also means that if you share a file with somebody else, they must also have copies of the image files you have used in your drawings. If you are using the images which come with CC3, then you won't need to swap anything.
Images in which the files are missing are displayed like this: .
Controlling Image Display
You can change the way images are displayed from Display Speed Settings.
